My NY Trip in a nutshell

I am writing this as I am leaving NY for Doha (transit there to the final destination). My two weeks in NY was excellent. It was great both professionally and personally.

The training was very good. It was basically a series of presentations from different branches and units from the headquarters. I got to learn a lot on important issues that the agency is working on. The course also included sessions on career management. I am normally swamped in the day to day busy work, but meeting senior people, especially the executive director (whom my boss in Nepal says one of the main reasons to work for this agency) and hearing strategic issues where we work, made me feel part of the organization and feel proud of the work we do. I know that the UN is far from perfect and often under much criticism for being bureaucratic and not effective. However, it is such a privilege to work for very important mandates, such as reducing maternal mortality, reducing poverty and empowering women. We had a short visit to the UN secretariat building (our HQ is not in there). It was funny that the last time I came was right after the job interview not knowing if I would ever get to work for the UN. This time I am officially their employee. There was an organized lunch at something called “delegates lounge” where all diplomats and other important people dine in the UN building. The food was indeed fantastic (and pricy off course) and I had a glimpse of the secretary general, Mr. Ban Ki Moon!!

Besides being overloaded with new information through the induction sessions, we were also given opportunities to network with the people at the HQ. I had several meetings with the technical people who are working in the areas where I am working. I had a really good time hanging out with my colleagues from other countries, as well.

On the personal level, it was fantastic. I ended up watching another musical, Lion King!!!, which was absolutely amazing. The best part was that my friend Helen made a very spontaneous decision to come to visit me in NY. We had 3 days together. And get this, I took THE VERY FIRST LEAVE DAYS (days) since the start of my posting. We had girlie outings, put on a cute summer dress and went to Soho, shopped, had the best ever french toast, had our nails done, walked around in the Central Park.

My waist line has expanded by crossing more cravings that I had: bagels, smoke salmon, pad thai, sushi, crepes, gelato etc etc.
